Compassion in World Farming International has a long history of active engagement with the United Nations (UN) for the benefit of animals, people, and the planet. We participate in several UN fora, programmes and frameworks promoting food systems transformation, with a specific focus on sustainable animal agriculture.

We engage with:

the UN General Assembly
the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
the Conferences of Parties (COP) and at the Intersessional Bonn Climate Conferences
the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), specifically the Committee on Agriculture and the Sub-Committee on Livestock
the Environment Programme (UNEP)
the Food Systems Summit (UNFSS).

We concentrate our efforts around specific topics, such as sustainable development, climate action, sustainable nitrogen management, sustainable livestock transformation, antimicrobial resistance, and sustainable nutrition.

In 2024, our Global CEO, Philip Lymbery, was appointed to the UN Food Systems Advisory Group, where he actively advances a holistic approach and solutions that benefit the health and welfare of people and animals within planetary boundaries.

Compassion aspires to work in partnership across the UN at the science-policy interface, to support governments and other stakeholders in developing evidence-based solutions towards humane and sustainable animal farming practices. Through continued collaboration with various bodies and agencies, we are able to strengthen coordination across the different UN processes, acting as force multipliers that drive meaningful progress.
