A sustainable food future

Our petition, signed by people from over 242 countries and regions, calls for an end to factory farming and a shift to a sustainable food future.

It outlines the urgent need for transformation of our global food system and urges the UN to set up a Global Agreement on food and farming. This would:

spark a transition to nature-positive farming systems that restore biodiversity and soils
help limit the global increase in temperatures to below 1.5C
deliver higher standards on farmed animal welfare
reduce our overreliance on animal protein in high-consuming countries
support fair, secure access to nutritious food for everyone
provide fair livelihoods for farmers and protect the rights of indigenous peoples, women, and vulnerable communities
ensure that financial and regulatory frameworks are in place to support this transition.

The global community will struggle to meet existing commitments on sustainable development, biodiversity and the Paris Climate Agreement without taking these steps.

We can’t continue this way

Debbie Tripley, our Global Director of Campaigns and Advocacy, said:

There’s a major culprit of the climate crisis that no-one’s talking about: factory farming. Not only does it inflict cruelty on farmed animals on an unimaginable scale, it also causes a third of direct greenhouse gas emissions, globally. That's more than planes, trains and cars combined. It’s obvious we can't continue this way.

The good news is a fairer food and farming system is possible – one that restores biodiversity, protects livelihoods, reduces waste, and keeps human and animal health at its heart. One that more than a million people around the world are calling for. But we can’t turn this into a reality without bold, brave action from the UN.

Compassion calls for UN Global Agreement on food and farming
