World renowned environmentalist and Compassion patron Dr. Jane Goodall and our Global CEO Philip Lymbery will be amongst the speakers at European’s first-ever symposium on cultivated meat in Brussels.

The Evolution of Food: Towards Animal Free and Sustainable Technology, will explore the potential benefits of cultivated meat, public opinion on the subject, as well as any barriers that may exist to it becoming widely available. It will be hosted by Gaia and Eurogroup for Animals and will take place at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels on 25th April.

Cultivated meat – also known as lab-grown, cultured or clean meat – is real meat produced without the slaughter of animals. It is made from cells taken from animals – which can be done without causing them harm – and is grown separately from them in a sterile environment, lowering the risk of infectious diseases.

Alternative sources of protein have grown in popularity in recent years as more and more people look to reduce or eliminate meat and dairy from their diets, due to animal welfare concerns or to reduce their impact on the planet.

Also speaking at the event will be Robert E. Jones, Head of Public Affairs at Mosa Meat and President of Cellular Agriculture Europe; Ira van Eelen, Co-founder and CEO of Kind Earth; and Chris Bryant, PhD., Director of Bryant Research Ltd.

Research shows that when cultivated meat is produced using renewable energy, the environmental impact is reduced by 93% compared to beef, 53% compared to pork, and 29% compared to poultry. This process also avoids the use of antibiotics – the overuse of which in conventional farming contributes to people becoming resistant to these life-saving drugs.
