Launched during Climate Week NYC, the 2026 Planetary Health Check delivers a stark message: while seven of the nine planetary boundaries were already known to be operating beyond safe limits, all seven have continued to deteriorate and are now at their highest recorded levels of transgression.

According to the international team of scientists behind the assessment, this means that the risks of large-scale, persistent, and potentially irreversible environmental change are increasing, while the world's margin for error continues to shrink.

Importantly, the report does not present the findings as an environmental scorecard alone. At the same time, the authors stress that the knowledge, technologies, and policy tools required to change course already exist.

Which planetary boundaries have been crossed?

The annual assessment, produced by the Planetary Boundaries Science Lab at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, evaluates the Earth's critical life-support systems. Seven boundaries are now assessed as transgressed:

Climate change
Biosphere integrity
Land-system change
Freshwater change
Biogeochemical flows (nitrogen and phosphorus)
Novel entities such as synthetic chemicals and plastics
Ocean acidification. Ocean acidification is highlighted as the latest boundary to move beyond the safe operating space.

Climate change and pressure on ecosystems

The report arrives after another year marked by record ocean heat, floods, droughts, wildfires, and extreme temperatures.

It also points to growing pressure on forests, soils and other natural carbon sinks, reducing the ability of ecosystems to absorb emissions and maintain resilience in the face of environmental change.

Connecting planetary health, food, and diets

The report suggests that a post-2030 development agenda should build on the aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals while placing greater emphasis on the "biophysical guardrails" that make long-term development possible.

They suggest that Planetary Boundaries provide a scientific basis for linking human wellbeing with the stability of the Earth system as adopted in the Safe and Just Earth System Boundaries, Doughnut Economics and the Planetary Health Diet.

The inclusion of the Planetary Health highlights growing recognition that healthy diets and environmental sustainability must be addressed together.
